Eastern European folklore includes a rich tapestry of stories, creatures, and beliefs stemming from ancient pagan roots, but shaped by cultural exchange and religious shifts.

Many traditions have roots in older, nature-based pagan beliefs that revered natural elements and spirits. Folklore often features powerful supernatural forces governing nature and human destiny. The myths have been shaped over centuries by the various cultures and religions that have existed and interacted in Eastern Europe.

Scandinavian folklore or Nordic folklore is the folklore of Norway , Sweden, Denmark , Iceland and the Faroe Islands. It has common roots with, and has been mutually influenced by, folklore in England, Germany, the Baltic countries, Finland and Sapmi. There are some commonalities across Scandinavian folkloric traditions, among them a common ground in elements from Norse Mythology as well as Christian conceptions of the world.

Norse mythology consists of tales of various deities, beings, and heroes derived from numerous sources from both before and after the pagan period, including medieval manuscripts, archaeological representations, and folk tradition.
